Materials Characterization Group
The objective within the Nuclear Science and Technology Division is to provide researchers at UNLV and also off-campus researchers e.g. at the National Laboratories (INL, LANL) with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and expertise to characterize condensed solid matter from macro-scale down to atomic scale. Our expertise in X-ray fine structure analysis and high-resolution electron microscopy is well recognized and we are offering 700 level courses in the areas of our expertise.
We provide decisive support to graduate- and PhD-level research within the arena of Nuclear Science and Technology at UNLV. Our analytical capabilities and expertise in the characterization of condensed solid matter is greatly important for the UNLV research program on the development of advanced Nuclear Fuels and novel Nuclear Waste forms and does further support fuel characterization efforts at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The NSTD Materials Characterization group is actively involved in Post-Irradiation Examination (PIE) efforts of irradiated fuels and materials at the national programs as defined under GNEP (Global Nuclear Energy Partnership). In the near future the Materials Characterization Group will serve as official partner facility within the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility (ATR NSUF) in support of PIE under the GNEP research envelope.
